Okinawa City Waterworks Bureau
Water Bill & FAQ History Contact Japanese
History
Okinawa City was established in 1974 combining two small cities called Koza City and Misato Village. Both of the cities didn't have their own water supply systems to individual households, and people had to go to community wells to draw water for daily use.
In 1958 Koza City and US military made a Water Supply Temporary Agreement and they connected the water distribution pipes with each other. That was the great first step to modern water supply facilities in our city.

When Okinawa City was established, the water section of both Koza City and Misato Village were combined into one and named Okinawa City Water Department. The City Water Department expanded the water supply areas community to community and built water reservoir tanks and pumping stations for a stable water supply.

Even though the department tried to stabilize the water supply, for many years, it suffered from water shortages. In 1976, Okinawan people had to survive the longest water rationing, 326 days, in the history of the Okinawa Prefecture. Depending on unreliable rainfall made the people of Okinawa uneasy.

In 1992, water business in Okinawa City reached 35th year since having water supply in 1958 as Koza City. The City Water Department changed their name to Okinawa City Waterworks Bureau and had reformation of the structure.

Also, because of frequent water shortages, the City Waterworks Bureau started to think that the effective usage of rain water would be very important in the future. In order to illuminate citizens about our limited water resources and the manifold usage of water, the City Waterworks Bureau started to make honorable recognition of people with effective usage of water resources in 1991.
